About Us
Starting life in Australia can look settled on the outside and still feel uncertain underneath
Starting over in a new country can feel exciting at first.
The move happens.
The paperwork gets done.
Life starts moving again.
But the questions about money, stability, and whether you’re settling the right way often come later.
Maybe you’re earning now, but still unsure where your money is going.
Maybe the bills feel heavier than expected.
Maybe you’re trying your best and still wondering what you should prioritise first.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
Our Australia Life is a practical, money-first guide for new immigrants in Australia, created from lived experience, not theory.
We’re here to help you feel less overwhelmed by the financial side of starting over, so you can make calmer decisions, understand what matters first, and build stability at your own pace.
Our story
It all started with a simple question.
One afternoon in May 2015, I was chatting with a colleague who was leaving our company, and I asked her where she was headed next. She paused, smiled, and said, “We’re moving to Australia.”
Something about that moment stayed with me.
I had always been curious about the idea of living abroad, but hearing someone say it so simply made it feel real in a way it never had before. Possible. Close enough to imagine.
That evening, I could not wait to tell my husband.
He had been gently bringing up the idea of moving to Australia for years, especially since his sister and her family were already in Melbourne. But he never pushed. He knew how hesitant I was to leave the Philippines, the only home I had ever known.
But something had changed in me by then.
Becoming a mother in 2013 shifted the way I saw the future. I was no longer just thinking about myself. I was thinking about the kind of life we wanted for our daughter, and what opportunities might be possible for her if we were willing to start again.
So with a mix of hope, fear, and faith, I said, “Let’s do it.”
What starting over really looked like for us
We moved to Australia in 2016 with our two-year-old daughter.
We left behind stable jobs, family, and everything familiar to begin again in a country that felt full of opportunity, but also full of unknowns.
We did not arrive with everything figured out.
Like many immigrants, we had to learn by living it.
There were delays, doubts, financial pressure, and seasons where even basic decisions felt heavier than they should. From job hunting to house hunting, from understanding bills to learning how everyday systems worked here, we were rebuilding life one decision at a time.
Some days felt hopeful.
Other days felt long.
There were moments when we questioned ourselves, moments when we felt stretched, and moments when even small wins mattered more than we expected. But slowly, bit by bit, things started to make more sense.
Not because everything suddenly became easy.
But because we kept learning the system.
Why we created Our Australia Life
We created Our Australia Life to share what helped us through that season.
Not polished advice from a distance.
Not generic motivation.
Not perfect answers.
Just honest, practical guidance based on real experience.
This space exists for new immigrants in Australia who may be quietly carrying a lot. The pressure to settle quickly. The confusion around money. The fear of making the wrong decision. The weight of trying to build a stable life while still adjusting to a new country.
We know that feeling because we lived it.
That is why our content focuses so strongly on the financial side of settling in. Money pressure can quietly shape so much of your first years here. It affects your choices, your confidence, your peace of mind, and how stable life feels day to day.
We want to help make that part feel clearer and more manageable.
What you’ll find here
We created this space to share our story the real, unfiltered ups and downs of starting life in Australia. We’re here to offer practical tips, personal experiences, and a glimpse into what it’s really like to go from immigrants to citizens, renters to homeowners, and savers to investors. We’re not experts, but we are a family that took a leap of faith and made it work.
Our advice isn’t about telling you what to do; it’s about sharing what worked for us. Our path may be different from others, but if our story can inspire even one family to take that first step, then it’s all worth it.
At Our Australia Life, we share guidance to help new immigrants in Australia:
- understand the financial side of settling in
- manage money with more clarity and less stress
- navigate real-life decisions like renting, work, and everyday costs
- feel more supported in the first years of starting over
Everything we create is shaped by lived experience, simplicity, and the belief that practical help should feel honest, calming, and human.
Why this space matters
This website is not just a collection of articles.
It is our way of sharing what we wish we knew when we were in the thick of our own early years in Australia.
The confusion.
The second-guessing.
The quiet financial stress.
The feeling of trying your best while still wondering if you’re doing enough.
Those experiences shaped this space.
If something we learned the hard way can help another immigrant family feel less overwhelmed, more informed, and a little more steady, then this work matters.
If you’re new here
If you’re feeling unsure where to start, the New Immigrant Money Roadmap is a simple place to begin.
It helps you see the bigger picture of what matters first in your early years in Australia, especially when it comes to money, stability, and settling decisions.
A small note from us to you
If life in Australia feels heavier, messier, or slower than you expected right now, please know this:
You’re not failing.
You’re learning a new system.
And that takes time.
We hope this space helps you feel a little clearer, a little calmer, and a little more supported as you build your life here.
You’re doing better than you think.
